Fun with Mixtures and Solutions

Today we have a fun home experiment you can try at home with the kids and family. Especially kids, they love this kind of stuff. In our little home/science experiment we will show you how to make awesome color changing explosions by mixing milk, food coloring, and soap so check out the video and follow along at home!Materials Needed:-Milk (Percentage doesn't matter)-Dish washing soap (EX-Dawn, Palmolive)-Food coloring -Q-tips-Recessed plate or bowl-Napkins because it can get messy ;-)Instruction:1. Pour milk into bowl until bottom is covered2. Slowly add in food coloring to the center of the bowl(try not to mix colors)3. Add soap to the end of Q-Tip4. Insert Q-Tip tip into the center without moving it around5. After a few seconds remove the Q-tip and enjoy the show of colorful fireworks exploding everywhere in the milkHow it works:Well fat has minerals, vitamins, proteins, and tiny drops of suspended fat in it aside from water. Fats and proteins are sensitive to their surroundings and when you add in soap the weak chemical balance that proteins and fats have is changed. Then its a colorful molecules free for all. With soap forming clusters that distribute the fat in the milk everywhere.Another possible reason is that milk is mostly water and has almost the same surface tension. Food coloring drops stay on the top without moving but when you add soap, it destroys the surface tension. By breaking bonds between the water and sending colors flying everywhere!
